ROPOS Dive Treasure Hunt

During our Summer/09  and Spring/10 installation & maintenance cruises, the remotely operated vehicle ROPOS made dozens of deep-sea dives. A wealth of interesting footage and notable events are contained in the recordings of these dives.

Explore the dives and share what you find!

Use this discussion page to post and talk about interesting events you discover in our SeaTube videos.

To access the dive videos:

  1. Go to SeaTube
  2. Log in to NEPTUNE Canada using your email address (if you don't have a NEPTUNE Canada account, you'll need to register for one.
  3. After logging in, you are taken to the SeaTube page – wait for a moment, until the "Select a Dive" dropdown menu is filled with all the dives, then choose a dive to start playing the dive recording.

    In this entertaining sequence, several curious Pacific Longnose Skates investigated our seismometer installation work. While ROPOS poured glass beads into the seismometer caisson, the skates came swimming by and eventually swam right into the middle of our work.

    Wally the benthic crawler is positioned in the midst of some Barkley Canyon gas hydrate outcrops, then powered up and tested. Finally, we left Wally sitting alone at a depth of 865m.

    A tour of strangely shaped volcanic outcrops, including pillow lava, as ROPOS traced the cable route in search of a suitable landing spot for the Endeavour node and Trawl-Resistant Frame.

    A purple octopus hunkers down, clinging to the top of the ODB 1026B CORK wellhead, as ROPOS attaches a connector to the CORK temperature sensor.
