Instrumentation Requirements, power & communications, platform requirements

No instruments currently installed - scheduled for Sept 2010

NEXT priority - fulfill Original Proposal (see attached)  to create more of an array in the Endeavour vent field - in order of priority - more than 1 point in Main field to look at gradients across this field, High Rise, Mothra, Sasquatch

Would like to see the maximum use of the HD video camera increase from 1hr day to 24hr day - this needs to be approved by SAC (Science Advisory Committee)

Water Column Mooring - above and top of plume (200 - 300m off of seafloor) to look at productivity and use for acoustics

temperature sensor's (cheap, simple, reliable - but is cabled technology required or could you use an acoustic modem - possible interference as long as 44khz?)

biological sensor's

? Can NEPTUNE Canada do annual sampling (old style) during maintenance cruises - e.g. RAS sampling before and after instrument install - is ROPOS equipped to do water sampling (water sampling bottles should be bought for ROPOS) - these are essential to the scientific objectives

Seismic - need broadband on the ridge with seafloor compliance and deep sea pressure gauges (need to consider implications of noise from other instruments e.g. moving parts)

FUTURE:

  • gas chromatograph - in development
  • mass spectrometer - in development
  • AUV's - docking system still in development - down the road - would be to observe increase in productivity at all depths, organisms, chemistry, temperature, heat fluxes, vertical flow/plumes, MAPr
  • Vertical Profiler - long term
  • Flow meter/current meter (variation/time/flow) but ideal instrument not yet developed
  • Particulate DNA
  • Expansion to Middle Valley not a priority until Endeavour more instrumented
