Session information
What will I learn?
In this workshop, participants will first be introduced to the concept of Data Citation, including best practices, Persistent Identifiers, FAIR Data Principles, benefits of data citation to data users, and more. We will then move into how ONC has implemented this function/service in Oceans 3.0, including DOIs, Landing Pages, data policy and licensing, and more. We will dedicate time to discussing these concepts together, and asking for feedback from your perspectives on improving functionalities and support services. At the end of this session, you will know how to cite data in Oceans 3.0, and know where to find resources to help with data citation.
How will it benefit me?
For data users, data citation supports the reproducibility of their research. It allows other researchers to locate and access research data more easily. It also increases transparency and encourages more high-quality datasets. Last but not least, it encourages the reuse of data for new research questions.
We want you to fully benefit from the data citation services that we provide. We hope to answer questions like:
- How do we cite data in our papers and publications?
- How is ONC incorporating best practices and standards?
- How can I learn more about this topic?
After this workshop, you will have a better understanding of data citation, a very important and rapidly emerging facet of data management.
Why do we cite data and why is it important?
Giving appropriate attribution to research data improves data discoverability, signals the usefulness and fitness of data, provides citable contributions to the scholarly record, and supports long-term reusability. Many journals and publishers recognize the need to cite data. In addition, listing the source of data and information legitimizes your research and ensures proper credit and acknowledgement is given.
Why am I invited?
You have been invited because you are considered a moderate to heavy user of Oceans 3.0 data. We would like to share with you more information about the data citation services that we offer, so that you can fully realize their benefits, and have input to their ongoing enhancements. We are including a wide spectrum of data users. Your participation and feedback will help us to deliver better services for diverse stakeholder perspectives and expectations. If there is anyone else that you would recommend for this workshop, please send an email to datacitations@oceannetworks.ca with their name, organization, email address, and why you are suggesting them.
What does it cost?
The workshop, being part of DynaCITE (Dynamic Citation Identifiers Training and Education), is offered free of charge to all ONC Data Users.
What pre-learning should I do?
In preparation for the Workshop, it would be valuable for Data Users to have a working understanding of how to access data in Oceans 3.0. Below, there are a few resources that you might find helpful to review beforehand.
- Exposure to Oceans 3.0 (previously known as Oceans 2.0) functionalities
- Find Data https://www.oceannetworks.ca/data/find-data/ > By Location, By Instrument, Web Services
- Demo Videos https://wiki.oceannetworks.ca/display/O2KB/Demo+Videos Overview, Data Search, Device Metadata, etc.
- ONC's Data Policy https://www.oceannetworks.ca/data/data-policy/
- Data Citation Wiki - provides a history and implementation of DOIs at ONC, and how to find Data Citations in Oceans 3.0 - https://www.oceannetworks.ca/data/how-to-cite-onc/ > https://wiki.oceannetworks.ca/display/DP/Data+Citations
