Primary Productivity and fluorescence
Fluorometers in the NEPTUNE Regional Network measure the fluorescence of sea water. The primary food source in the food chain of the ocean are phytoplankton. These organisms emit light, or fluoresce. By measuring the fluorescence biologist get a direct reading on the amount of primary production in the area.
